Video Art - Written Reflection

For my video,  I chose the theme of a close-up. The idea of intimacy sparked the idea of getting ready and doing my makeup a private act I do by myself. Filming myself doing my makeup felt vulnerable. I think this added to the theme of a close-up. I had ten minutes of footage once I put all the clips together, after cutting all the footage I had around a four-minute-long video. I decided to speed up most of the clips, as I felt the normal speed was too slow and gave the footage an awkward feel. I struggled most with deciding what to do audio-wise. I thought about putting in a song or doing a voice-over. In the end, I decided to add three videos of me as a kid for the audio. I did this to contrast with me doing my makeup, something we consider an adult thing to do. The audio adds a new dimension to the video, contrasting childhood with adulthood and showing that, at this stage of my life, I am standing at the cusp of both worlds. I used my point-and-shoot camera to film, and below you will see how I set it up, stacking objects from my bedroom in Calgary. For the close-up shot of my eyes, I held the camera in one hand. I played around with Zoom on my camera and the angle at which I was sitting. For some shots, the camera and I were straight across from each other, and in other shots, I was digital from the camera. For lighting, I used the light in my room, the lamp on my desk, and the blinds were up at my window.
