The idea for my digital painting was a mermaid sitting on a rock. Once the base of my mermaid was done, I began to add things to the background. I put my favourite source images as elements sitting around the mermaid. As I started exploring my image, I began to embrace the Kitsch aesthetic. A total of 16 source images were used for this painting. In another post, you can see all the images I used with a breakdown of what I used them for. My idea was to play on consumers' perception of the mermaid and on how the symbol is used today to sell products. Souvenirs in a beach town, toys for imaginative little kids. Mermaids have been abused in a capitalist society. Today, you can buy your very own mermaid tail or go to an aquarium and see a mermaid swim with fish. We have figured out how to capitalize on mythical creatures, and I wanted to play on that idea, but in a fun way.
